Inside the Mind of Left-Hander

It’s back-to-school season, and, for the first time, some parents will discover that their children are left-handed.

Doesn’t sound like a big deal, right? That’s probably because times have changed.

Until the second half of the 20th century, it wasn’t uncommon to hear about parents and teachers coaxing lefties into using their right hand for daily tasks including writing, eating, and teeth-brushing. In most parts of the world, that’s no longer a standard practice—but certain myths about left-handedness persist. The truth is that left-handedness is much more than a trivial paw preference: It may be a useful lens through which to examine brain development.....weiterlesen

The unique Sciences of beiing Left-Handedness - Being a lefty goes beyond just a hand preference.

Steak knives, scissors, writing desks, and power tools: If you bring any of these things up around someone and they cringe, they either have a bizarre story to tell or they’re just left-handed, and, like 15 percent of the population, live in a world that’s not designed for them.

But handedness goes deeper than how you like to hold a pen. A dive into the genetics of handedness reveals that southpaws have quite a few other things in common, as well. But before that, it’s important to understand where handedness comes from. ....weiter lesen

Wo kommen die Linkshänder her?

Epigenetic regulation of lateralized fetal spinal gene expression underlies hemispheric asymmetries

Lateralization is a fundamental principle of nervous system organization but its molecular determinants are mostly unknown. In humans, asymmetric gene expression in the fetal cortex has been suggested as the molecular basis of handedness. However, human fetuses already show considerable asymmetries in arm movements before the motor cortex is functionally linked to the spinal cord, making it more likely that spinal gene expression asymmetries form the molecular basis of handedness....weiter lesen
